SUSTAINING UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Karoline Lewis, Luther TS

I wonder if in this moment, when Jesus is being loved with a grace upon grace kind of love, an abundance of love, a love that you could even smell, with a fragrance that would linger for days, the Jesus remembered his mother. Three years ago. Back in Cana. At the wedding. His mother, who loved him, who knew who he was and what he was capable of doing. His  mother, without whom, I wonder, when Jesus' ministry would have actually gotten started.

  • Not my time
  • Due to her insistent Jesus does what he was intended to do
  • Because of her love, Jesus can do what he came to do

Jesus needs that same encouragement, that same love, to do what he must do during his three years of ministry.

That ministry took him through more that what is recorded. He was celebrated, maligned, set up to fail, and continued to teach and heal - to go to the least the lost and the lonely.

Do you know what it means to love someone into their future?

  • Send child off to school or military or new job
  • Be with a loved one who is leaving for the final time - in death
  • Or for Mary, to annoint Jesus

The annointing worthy of a king and worthy of burial

  • That love was with him as he went to Jerusalem
  • Entered to praise
  • Wash the feet of his disciples
  • To be "ratted out" by a disciple
  • Captured, tried and flogged
  • Turned on by his people to the authority of Rome
  • Flogged again and walked to his own cross

The sustaining, unconditional love of both Mary's - mother and friend.

  • With him always as was the father's love

Some use the saying that "I pulled myself up by my own bootstraps"-the great American spirit of "I'll do it myself."

But as many can say, it's me but God's unconditional love that carries the day and life.

"Living for others a life that is true, striving to please them in all that I do, living allegiance is all true, this is the pathway of living for me."
